“I wanted to get healthy again”, said Thelessia Hemstreet, CNM’s fitness classes helped her reach and maintain this goal.

Hemstreet is Liberal Arts graduate, Phlebotomy technician, full time Political Science student and a Jingle Dress/Fancy Shawl dancer, she started taking fitness classes over a year ago at CNM.

“Back in 2015 I got really sick and I almost died”, she said.

She lost 70 pounds after spending two months in the hospital, during her recovery Thelessia gained a lot of weight and she even had to learn to walk again.

“When I started it took me 15 minutes to run my first mile, I was so proud of myself when with their help I ran a mile in 9 minutes” she said.

The instructors really work with the students and motivate them throughout, some of the students run marathons and are trained athletes, she said.

When Thelessia first started the running conditioning class she was the one walking behind the group, she said, “everyone would run back and motivate me to keep going, it’s all about the people in the program, they still do that for everybody as long as you try.”

She says, the running drills build up her resistance and the cardio kickboxing has helped develop her footwork.

“I am getting back into Pow Wow dancing and I love it, being traditional puts me at peace and all these fitness classes are really helping me with that”, she said.

She also added her favorite quote by Narijo Moore,  “Why we dance: To dance is to pray, to pray is to heal, to heal is to give, to give is to live, to live is to dance.”

“During fall and spring terms I take evening workout classes to let all the stress out”, she said.

Growing up on the reservation, her dad trained her to run in the open spaces and the hills, her brothers ran cross-country, and she always loved basketball and volley ball, she said.

The exercise labs have new equipment and new floors, the classes are combined with people of all ages and have ranges of intensity that work for everyone, she added.

“I love our instructors” said Thelessia, a lot of people don’t know about these classes but even some students from UNM come to take them because we have great instructors, and the price is really good. “My sister and I have set a goal for ourselves to run the hills in the reservation”.

Hemstreet’s personal health tip is to Drink Water, and lemons. This little trick helped her drop 10 pounds in a couple weeks. “I cut out the sodas in my diet and doing the running conditioning class”, Water and lemons 😉 , she said.

I’d like to see more people in the program and more sports classes like basketball for example said Thelessia.

Vegan: Eating For Ethics at CNM

To learn about how food choices affect health, the environment, and animals an information presentation with a question and answer session is scheduled for March 23rd at 10:30 am in the Richard Barr Room on Main Campus, according to Anna Rose Daigle.

Daigle is a Humane Educator from the Ethical Choices Program , and said the educational organization’s goal is, through school presentations, to stimulate critical thinking while giving people the information and tools they need to make informed food choices.

She said “We often don’t realize what a profound impact our choices may have on others. If one person decides to change the course of their health and their footprint on the planet, a dialogue begins with family and friends, and with that dialogue, a chance to share the science behind all those seemingly harmless decisions we make so many times a day.”

Daigle advises students interested in getting involved in environmental issues politically to “start meet up groups, engage in friendly dialogue, ask questions, share your research with friends, family, and strangers, engage with your community, meet like-minded individuals, and be kind!”

She recommends that those interested in ethical choices education take courses in environmental sciences and nutrition.

Daigle said “I love my job. I remember the exact moment I was made aware of the impacts of animal agriculture. I felt betrayed and alone in my hurt and anger. My goal is to make sure my audience knows that they are not alone in any of the feelings that come up in the presentation.”

Daigle elaborated on what students may see as obstacles to transitioning to a plant based diet.

“At first, switching to a plant based diet may feel inconvenient; asking if this has cheese or if that is made with milk. Like any lifestyle change, there is a period of adjustment, but luckily our complex and intelligent bodies make those changes a little easier for us,” she said.

She also said that friends and family “may find your decision strange or difficult to comprehend, but often those initial feelings of apprehension dissipate once your healthy choices become the new normal.”

Eating foods low in cholesterol and saturated fat will give you more energy, make you feel better and even reverse the process of disease and inflammation, she said.

Colleges across the country have been adding more plant-based options to their regular menus and a great example is The University of Northern Texas which has just opened a fully-plant based dining hall, she said.

According to the Vegan Report Card Ranking the University of Northern Texas received an A+ ranking with a student satisfaction rating of 94% of the availability of vegan food on college campuses by creating the Mean Greens Cafe, an entirely plant based cafe.

As a comparison, the only college in New Mexico to receive an A rating is New Mexico State University, although none of the colleges in New Mexico responded to their request to be surveyed.

Daigle now lives in South Carolina as a result of participating in the National Student Exchange through the University of New Mexico, where she majored in University Studies.

When asked what led to her decision to move after graduating she explained that because of her love for the show True Blood she said that everyone the show “looked so glistening and beautiful in that small Louisiana town. I had never been to the deep South, so I figured I’d give it a shot. I picked the dot (the school on the exchange map I was shown) closest to the ocean on the other side of the country and before I knew it I was standing in Charleston, SC on a particularly balmy August day. I sweat through two shirts that day and have never once mastered glistening.”

Behavioral Health Speaker Series

CNM is offering Behavioral Health Speaker Series to students, community members and staff, said Student Events and Program Manager Libby Fatta.

The CNM/UNM behavioral speaker series started in fall of 2014 and it was a partnership with the UNM department of psychiatry, Fatta said.

The goal with the speaker series is to bring various mental health and behavioral health lectures to CNM and to the community and invite people to come to a free mental health lecture, Fatta said.

A lot of these lectures have different resources people can use and they are all given by doctors with the UNM department of psychiatry, Fatta said.

The doctors are the ones who lead the lectures and we determine what the topics are going to be, she said.

“All the lectures are free and available to everyone,” she said.

The lectures are held during lunch time to encourage staff and students to come listen to a free lecture while on their lunch break, she said.

Most of the doctors will include slides that feature local resources for anyone that may need help with the type of issues that are being discussed or if students know of someone that may need help, Fatta said.

The doctors giving the lectures are specialists in the area that they are giving the lecture on and can usually provide specific resources to those who need additional information, she said.

Fatta said that the Behavioral Health Speaker Series will continue and there will likely be lectures in the summer and fall terms.

CNM chose to do it every third Thursday of the month during lunch to encourage more people to come to the lectures since it is a consistent time, she said.

The next lecture will take place on Thursday March 24 from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. on Main Campus in MS room 102 and will be on Alcohol and Domestic Violence and the research behind it.

The speaker of this lecture will be Dr. Brandi Fink with the UNM Department of Psychology.

The last lecture of the spring 2016 speaker series will be held on Thursday April 21 from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. on Main Campus in MS room 102 and Dr. Kristina Sowar will be covering the topic of Eating Disorders.

“These speaker series are a great way for students to learn more about topics related to their classes or their future careers,” Fatta said.

Get Fit and Win

HealthyWage is a program where people can compete for prices while losing weight at the same time in order to improve their long term decision making skills, said David Roddenberry co-founder of HealthyWage.

The program is set up to make weight loss fun and easy for staff and their families, he said.

All staff members and families are welcome to join this event, he said.

This includes staff from UNM, CNM, and APS, he said.

“Our goal is to help people with their long term healthy living”, Roddenberry said.

Daniel Tena, Chemistry major, said the price is $20 every month for a total of $60, but they ask for $75 during sign up, but people usually get much more than they initially invest.

The rules are that people must lose six percent of their bodyweight and form a team of three to five people in order to win, he said.

It is possible for each member with in a team to win a part of the prize, he said.

The prize is whatever money is put in by the participants after HealthyWise takes a 20 percent cut, he said.

The first step of the program is to weigh in and there are multiple options for that, said Tena.

One way is to make a thirty second video in your house and submit it in or you can make other arrangements, said Tena.

Roddenberry said, different resources are provided for those who choose to join the program,.

These include a nutritionists and a coach to help people on their progress to a healthier life, said Roddenberry.

The atmosphere is child friendly and people are welcome to bring their children, said Roddenberry.

The company is in its seventh year and has worked with more than 600 clients, said Roddenberry.

About 40 percent of clients have succeed the six percent weight loss goal, said Roddenberry.

The 12 week program consists of four weeks of nutrition, four weeks of physical activity, and four weeks of more focused weight loss, said Roddenberry.

Another resource that can be used are videos online that clients can watch in order to help them with their weight loss program, said Roddenberry.

There are other programs that assist with weight loss for individuals that do not qualify for this specific program, said Roddenberry.

“People who attend this program usually continue their weight loss journey thanks to the competition, the friendships established, and their pride”, said Roddenberry.

The team is the most important component to this program, said Roddenberry.

This is the same program for everyone and all weight classes have the same chance of achieving their goals, said Roddenberry.

The overall goal is to help people make better decisions and help people live healthier lives, said Roddenberry.

Tena said, after a team wins the price gets split up between the participants.

“There are a lot of fun workouts to do and everyone is so nice”, said Tena

If a person does not have a group to join with the program will provide you with a team to join, it is a very nice way to meet new people, said Tena.
