The Late O.W.L. Gets The Cookie

The Library on main campus is staying open until 11PM until Thursday December 1, Varina Kosovich library outreach coordinator said.

The Open Way Late (OWL)  program provides library resources, tutors, and study spaces to students in the week before finals week, she said.

Along with the normal resources available to students, the library staff is offering free cookies and coffee to help keep the students going, she said.

OWL is expected to serve over 400 students this week, with most students seeking help with science classes, Kosovish said.

Tutors for math, science and English are on hand the whole night to help students, she said.

The OWL program keeps the library open late at the end of Fall and Spring terms, she said.

In the study room across from the library main desk, physical therapy student Adam Peacock studied slides for anatomy and physiology lab, he said.

Outside of OWL hours, Peacock finds it hard to make it to the library for quality study time, he works during the day and has class until 9pm, he said.

Alex Theodorou a math and physics tutor worked with CNM students Jackie Lovato and Pearla Franco on advanced math classes, he said.

Theodorou said he has been busy every night so far and he is grateful to have the extra hours available to assist students in their final weeks of the semester.

Jackie Lovato is applying for the radiologic technologist program in spring of 2017, she said.

“The x-ray tech program is very hard to get into but the extra hours of tutoring and studying are making a big difference” she said.

Lovato said she arrives at eight in the morning and stays until 11pm only leaving for class.

Working with other students, the tutors and being surrounded by other working helps her stay awake late into the night and get more studying done than if she was at home, Perla Franco said.

CNM Students Ching Lu and Makayla Beach took advantage of the study rooms on the main floor, utilizing the large white board for working out complex problems for their Chemistry 1810 class.

They work together frequently at the library, usually getting kicked out at 9pm, Lu said.

“Studying at home can be difficult with do many distractions and other things that need to get done, like laundry” he said.

The extended hours help by offering not only a distraction free environment, but the resources such as the whiteboards and reference material, all at student’s fingertips, he said.

 

The Open Way Late program is also available at the Montoya campus .

Tutor Times | Tutoring services available to students

There are a variety of free tutoring services available at the CNM campuses to all CNM students, according to cnm.edu.

Tutoring help is provided in various subjects that include but are not limited to: Physics, English, Math, Biology, Chemistry, ESL, GED, and Computer, according to the Assistance Centers for Education.

Students that are interested in tutoring help can visit any of the locations below during the times that are listed.

If students have more questions about the tutoring services that are offered or if students need more information on how to get tutoring help they can call Assistance Centers for Education (ACE) at (505) 224-4306.

Students can also set up appointments online by visiting this link

Note that not every service is available at each campus, according to the ACE website.

According to CNM, the tutoring services that are available at the CNM campuses are as follows:

Main Campus Learning Center

Students who are interested in receiving tutoring help on Main Campus can visit the SRC building room 203. The hours for tutoring help at this location are as follows, according to the cnm.edu and CNM tutor Walker Williamson.

Monday – Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:50 p.m.

Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Subjects that students can get help with at Main Campus are: Math, Chemistry, Applied Math, ESL, Statistics, Physics, English, Biology and GED, according to Assistance Centers for Education.

Students need to sign in at the front desk for tutoring services and will receive a card with the subject that they need help in.

Students can also go online to schedule an appointment with the tutors.

Montoya Campus Learning Center

Tutoring services at the Montoya Campus are in building J, rooms 103 and 107. The hours for tutoring at Montoya campus are as follows, according to cnm.edu.

Monday – Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:20 p.m.

Subjects that students can get help with at the Montoya campus are: Accounting, Applied Math, Biology, Chemistry, Computer, Math, English, Physics, ESL, Statistics and GED.

Rio Rancho Learning Center

Students who are interested in tutoring services at the Rio Rancho Campus can visit building RR, room 115 during the hours below, according to cnm.edu.

Monday – Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Subjects that students can get help with at the Rio Rancho campus include: Chemistry, Biology, Math, Physics, English, Computer, GED, and Statistics.

South Valley Campus Learning Center

Tutoring services at the South Valley Campus are located in building SV, room 106. Students can receive tutoring help during these hours, according to cnm.edu.

Monday – Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Subjects that students can receive help with include: Adult Education, Biology, Chemistry, Computer, English, ESL, GED, and Math.

Westside Campus Learning Center

Tutoring services at the Westside campus are held in building MJG, room 115. The hours for tutoring are as follows, according to cnm.edu.

Monday – Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:20 p.m.

Subjects that students can get help with at the Westside Campus include: Accounting, Biology, Chemistry, Computer, English, ESL, GED, Math, Physics, and Statistics.

Advanced Technology Center

Tutoring services at the Advanced Technology Center are located in the Learning Commons in building ATC, room 126 during the following hours, according to cnm.edu.

Monday – Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 8:20 p.m.

Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:50 p.m.

Subjects that students can receive help with include: Applied Math, Architectural Drafting, English, and Math.

Students who are needing more one on one tutoring in IT 0850 or IT 1010 can set up special sessions with ACE computer tutors.

They are by appointment only and each student is allowed three of these sessions a semester. For more information on how to set up an individual computer session call (505) 224-3840 or (505) 224-4314.

Again these special sessions will be by appointment only, according to Assistance Centers for Education.

Tutors will not help with take-home exams or quizzes nor will tutors proofread or review papers or assignments the instructor has determined is the student’s responsibility, according to cnm.edu.

The CNM tutors are there to give positive feedback, listen closely to the problem, and help identify and correct recurring errors.

The tutors will ask questions that will help in the problem solving process and they will provide guidance in understanding and solving the problem, according to cnm.edu.

Tutors available for nearly every subject

The tutoring service at the Student Resource Center gives students the opportunity to get help with various sub­jects, and Liberal Arts major Rudy Sanchez said he makes use of those services often. The Assistance Center for Education at Main campus is located on the top floor of the SRC. The locations of the tutoring centers at other campuses can be found at cnm.edu.

“I was here at the tutor­ing center for six to seven hours last time. If it was not for the tutoring center I would not be where I am at now,” said Sanchez.

Steve Valdez, Youth Counseling major, said the staff at the tutoring center has been very helpful to him and he plans to come back more as he continues his studies.

“I just started coming back to school so the tutoring center is going to be a big help for me. I am glad the center is here,” said Valdez.

Rhett Zyla, Chemistry tutor, said the tutoring center is a good resource for students as it offers free tutoring and they can get most of their questions answered by a tutor on staff.

“A student can come between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. and get tutored on most of the subjects they need help with,” Zyla said.

Don McIver, Learning Center supervisor said the Assistance Centers for Education are at every campus and the resources are a bit different depending on what classes are available at each campus.

Some of the subjects on which ACE offers tutoring are: Writing, Adult Education, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and IT 1010, said McIver.

“We also have drop-in tutoring, tutoring by appointment, work­shops, study groups and computer labs for student use,” McIver said. At the Business Resource Center in Smith-Brasher Hall, tutoring is offered for Accounting, he said. Culinary Arts tutoring is offered at Smith-Brasher Hall at Main campus next to the Culinary Lab and the Applied Math tutor is located in the commons area at Ted Chavez Hall, he said.

“There are variations between campuses for the times that certain tutors are available. It is a staffing and business issue. Rio Rancho and South Valley are more limited compared to Main campus,” he said.

It is recommended that students call ahead before going to the tutoring cen­ters to make sure they will be able to receive assistance with their studies, he said.

Students can also visit the CNM website to learn more about what tutoring services are available and also check for open computers at differ­ent locations, he said.

“If you go to Lab Maps, it will show you all the computers ACE manages and if you click on it you can see what computers are open. If you are wor­ried about computer avail­ability you can click on the map and see if there are open computers,” he said.

“If a student is wor­ried about getting help with a subject they can call the front desk to check on the schedule to see if and when particu­lar tutors are there when they need them,” he said.
